Graduation

I've officially ended school at UNLV this week.

And I’m going to miss school so, so much. The funny thing is, while studying at previous educational institutions, I’ve always anticipated graduation like how a kid looks forward to the new candy store opening across the street. But this time, graduation’s different. I don’t know if its because my last educational pit stop ( for now ) before I get propelled in to the work force , or because I’m just pretty damm unsure of what I want to do. But what I do know is that these 2 years at UNLV have been a roller coaster ride. I came in and left a different person ;and looking back, I wouldn't have changed my decision for the world.

This is my unlv journey.

Before I came to UNLV, I enrolled for a business degree at UNSW, a finance one at SIM and a Mass com one at this fucked up “school” in city hall. As you can see, I was basically quite messed up. My uncle was appalled by the way I handled my future, I mean who wouldn’t, so he decided to enroll me in this hospitality school at which he knew people in. So I agreed, without a clue of what I was going to be studying, to attend school at UNLV.

I think I had a huge shock especially during the first few months of studying there. Most of my classmates had prior experience in the hospitality line or had some clue about what they wanted from the course, but I had none. In fact, I didn’t even realize that there was a degree you could take to work at a hotel ( hahaa the irony ). I had to learn the hotel culture from scratch and at the same time, there was a culture shock as I started to mix with my classmates. Hospitality students are really different and my cohort has one of the most interesting mix of people from different walks.

Maybe its because I came in with such low expectations that I’m leaving with such mixed emotions.

We were the first batch and helmed the school by scratch. We carved out the rules of our establishment and were the first group to invade the city hall/bugis area. We lived through back to back projects, camped in school, threw parties as often as we could, sneaked alcohol into class, moaned about our short holidays, bitched about our lecturers, cheated on exams collectively, skipped class (well mostly its me lah) frequently, hurled expletives at the many courses we thought were irrelevant, went for dozens of field trips, gambled excessively in school and soooo much more.

I also grew up so much as a person because of the influences that I had from this school and the people I’ve mixed with. In an industry that is masked with plastered smiles and hypocrisy everywhere, I’ve learnt to handle myself a lot better than when I first came in. I think I’ve managed to open up a lot more than I otherwise would never have. I’m so grateful for the good friends I’ve made at UNLV and I would never have graduated if not for their help .I would also never had gotton through many of 2007’s toughest moments if there weren’t friends motivating me to go to school and hit my books.

All in all, its been one helluva 2 years and I will bring the memories I’ve made there to my grave. This decision has been a huge blessing in disguise and I thank God for making the right choice for me. (:

So, what’s next
